Candle Care Tips to Help Your Candles Last Longer

Candle longevity is affected by several environmental and usage factors. Natural soy wax (that I use in our HHN candle line) in particular is a slow, cooler-burning wax, but how you, the customer, uses it makes a big difference in how long it lasts.

Here are the main things that influence burn time and how to make their candles last longer.

1. Wick Length Matters

A wick that’s too long burns hotter and consumes wax faster.

Best practice:

  • Trim the wick to about ¼ inch before each burn.

  • A shorter wick = slower burn and longer candle life.

This is one of the biggest factors in candle longevity.

2. Burn Long Enough to Reach a Full Melt Pool

Did you know that soy wax has “memory”? It’s true!

If someone only burns it for 20–30 minutes, the wax will tunnel and waste a lot of the candle.

Ideal burn time:

  • Burn 2–3 hours the first time

  • Allow the melt pool to reach edge to edge of the jar

After that, the candle will burn evenly and last longer overall.

3. Avoid Drafts and Airflow

Air movement causes the flame to flicker and burn hotter.

Things that shorten burn time:

  • Ceiling fans

  • Open windows (that are breezy)

  • HVAC vents

  • Air purifiers blowing directly on it

A steady flame burns slower and cleaner.

4. Room Temperature

Yes, the room temperature actually matters.

  • Warm rooms soften soy wax, making it burn faster.

  • Cooler rooms slow the burn slightly.

Soy wax already has a lower melting point than paraffin, so heat in the environment can accelerate melt.

5. Sunlight and Storage

Direct sunlight won’t necessarily shorten burn time immediately, but it can degrade the candle over time.

Sunlight can:

  • Fade fragrance

  • Discolor soy wax

  • Slightly soften the wax

Best storage tips:

  • Cool, dry area

  • Away from direct sunlight

6. Burning Too Long

Many people think longer burns are better, but that actually shortens the life of the candle.

Recommended burn cycle:

  • 2–4 hours at a time

  • Let the candle cool and reset before relighting.

7. Candle Lamps (For Our Unwicked Candle)

For the candle warmer lamp version:

Things that affect longevity include:

  • Bulb wattage (most use 35–50W)

  • Distance from bulb to wax

  • Room temperature

A warmer lamp typically:

  • Melts only the top layer

  • Uses fragrance slower than an open flame

So in many cases, wax melts can last longer under a lamp because the wax isn’t actually being consumed by a flame.

A Simple Way to Remember Candle Care for Your HHN Candles

Soy candles are naturally slow-burning, but how they’re used makes a big difference. Keeping the wick trimmed, allowing the wax to melt edge-to-edge, and avoiding drafts will help the candle burn evenly and last much longer. If you’re using a candle lamp instead of a flame, the fragrance often lasts even longer because the wax isn’t actually burning.

A Quick Rule of Thumb

A typical 16 oz soy candle burns roughly:

  • 80–100 hours with proper care.

Enjoy!
